The LEGO(R) Group and McLaren Automotive have taken on the ultimate challenge of driving a full-size, drivable “McLaren P1™” made of LEGO(R) bricks around the Silverstone Circuit.
This life-size McLaren P1™ made of LEGO® bricks uses an incredible 342,817 LEGO® bricks, including electric parts, and features a fully functional steering system, making it a drivable model.
While there have been several projects in the past to create life-size automobiles out of LEGO® bricks, and some models that could move using electric parts with a driver inside, this McLaren P1™ is the first full-size model to incorporate steering functionality, making it truly “drivable” in the literal sense.
The LEGO Group and McLaren have demonstrated unprecedented engineering to enable a life-size LEGO brick McLaren P1 to actually drive on the Silverstone Circuit in the UK. The model is equipped with an electric motor made up of LEGO Technic batteries and electric vehicle batteries, allowing it to travel further than any previous LEGO brick car model.
This project involved 23 designers, engineers, and building experts from the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive, who spent 8,344 hours on development and construction, utilizing 393 different types of LEGO Technic parts.
Driving on the Circuit
For this ultimate challenge project, the completed LEGO® brick McLaren P1™ was set to drive on the Silverstone Circuit in England, where the first F1 Championship was held in 1950.
The driver chosen to operate this historic model was McLaren’s F1 driver, Lando Norris.
With Norris at the wheel, the life-size McLaren P1™ replica successfully completed a lap of the 5.891-kilometer course, achieving the ultimate challenge!
Watching the official video of the car actually driving on the circuit is quite thrilling!
