Among these, the two new Starter Sets (product numbers: 72043 and 72038) are drawing particular attention. While the exact release timing in 2025 is unknown, based on past patterns, July or August seems likely.
Based on the series’ history and pricing, let’s consider who might be the star of these new Starter Sets. Since Mario, Luigi, and Peach’s Starter Sets were just released in August 2024, it’s almost certain that the new Starter Sets will feature different characters.
Looking Back at the Classic Starter Sets
Since its launch in 2020, the LEGO® Super Mario series has featured Starter Sets centered around three main characters: Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Each set includes a figure of the main character with built-in electronic devices including Bluetooth, screen, and speaker – essential components for fully enjoying the LEGO® Super Mario experience.
Who Will Star in the New Starter Sets?
The two suspected new Starter Sets for 2025 are both priced at $49.99, matching the price point of existing Starter Sets. This suggests they’ll likely have similar content structure. The big question is: who will be the new starring characters? Here are the top candidates:
Top Pick: Wario
Wario is the strongest contender. As a villain character who hasn’t appeared in previous Starter Sets, he brings something new to the table. Known as Mario’s rival, Wario has a strong fan following thanks to his unique personality. His treasure-hunting character trait could introduce new gameplay mechanics focused on collecting coins and treasures for points.
Second Choice: Daisy
Princess Daisy is another strong possibility. Since her debut in “Super Mario Land” (1989), she has maintained a dedicated fan base. Known as Luigi’s partner, her cheerful and energetic personality makes her popular with children. With Princess Peach already having her own Starter Set, adding another female character makes sense from a product lineup perspective. A Daisy-centered set could feature special abilities themed around flowers and incorporate the dynamic movements she’s known for in Mario sports games.
Bowser
As the series’ main antagonist, Bowser would be a natural choice for a Starter Set. However, since he’s consistently been positioned as an enemy character in the LEGO® Super Mario series so far, this role might continue, making a Starter Set less likely.
Other Possibilities
Donkey Kong and Waluigi are also potential candidates. However, Donkey Kong already has multiple related sets in the LEGO® Super Mario line, making a new Starter Set less likely. As for Waluigi, since he’s not as prominent a character as Wario, it’s unlikely he’d get a Starter Set at the same time as Wario, if Wario is indeed chosen.
Conclusion
While Wario and Daisy seem like strong candidates for new Starter Sets, it’s worth noting that they’re technically spin-off characters rather than main series protagonists. If LEGO® stays true to the core Super Mario experience, we might instead see main series characters like Bowser, Toad, or Bowser Jr.
Whatever the case, we hope these new Starter Sets will mark an exciting turning point for LEGO® Super Mario and usher in a new era of possibilities.
