Universal Pictures has announced the production of four new live-action films based on “LEGO(R) bricks,” as reported by media outlets such as Deadline.
This announcement comes as Universal’s five-year contract to produce LEGO(R) movies from 2020 to 2025 approaches its deadline.
Notable Directors and Screenwriters
While details about the films’ content have not been released, the lineup of directors includes notable names such as Jake Kasdan of the “Jumanji” series, Patty Jenkins of the “Wonder Woman” series, and Joe Cornish, who wrote the screenplay for “Attack the Block.”
For the screenplays, Kasdan’s film will be written by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, Jenkins will co-write her film with former DC Comics president Geoff Johns, and Cornish’s film will be written by Simon Rich based on an original idea by author Heather Ann Campbell.
Additionally, a newly announced “LEGO(R) Ninjago” movie will be scripted by Kevin and Dan Hageman, known as co-creators of the LEGO(R) Ninjago television series.
From Warner to Universal
Previously, Warner Brothers produced four CGI animated LEGO(R) movies that were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
Universal acquired the rights to make LEGO(R) brand movies in 2020 through a five-year deal with the LEGO(R) Group and its parent company KIRKBI Invest. Their subsidiary, Focus Features, released “Piece by Piece,” a film depicting singer Pharrell Williams’ life using LEGO(R) bricks, in October 2024 in the United States.
The live-action LEGO(R) movies announced by Universal this time are drawing attention to how the transition from primarily CGI animation to live-action will be realized.
While specific details about the films’ content and release dates have not been revealed, there is high interest from both within and outside the industry, and future developments are eagerly anticipated.
