LEGO(R) brick information site bricktastic has released unofficial information about a new LEGO(R) Icons product for 2025. However, this information is not confirmed until an official announcement is made.

According to the post, Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine (airplane) will be produced early in 2025, likely between January and March[1].

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), who was both an artist and a scientist, designed multiple flying machines and left their concepts in sketches. The one likely to be produced this time is the ornithopter, which flies by flapping its wings[1].

The da Vinci flying machine currently being considered for production is expected to have 493 pieces and cost $59.99. While it’s relatively small for a LEGO(R) Icons set excluding houseplants, it’s expected to incorporate a flapping motion[1].

Speaking of LEGO(R) sets with moving wings, LEGO(R) Harry Potter has previously released sets like Hedwig, Fawkes, and the Hungarian Horntail.

In these LEGO(R) Harry Potter sets, each creature was mounted on a stand, and turning a handle would move the wings. Given the expected price of Leonardo da Vinci’s ornithopter, if it’s actually released, it might be similar in scale to these sets and possibly apply a similar design[1].

LEGO(R) Icons Ornithopter

In February 2024, LEGO(R) Icons released an ornithopter featured in the movie “Dune”.

This set has 1,369 pieces and recreates the movement of multiple wings on just one side. The expected piece count for Leonardo da Vinci’s version of the ornithopter is 493, considerably fewer than the Dune version[1].

LEGO(R) new product information

It’s still uncertain whether LEGO(R) Icons will release Leonardo da Vinci’s ornithopter, but LEGO(R) sets themed around historical figures have been produced several times, mainly as purchase bonuses. Furthermore, given that the Wright brothers’ Wright Flyer has been produced in the past, it wouldn’t be surprising if Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine was released from LEGO(R) Icons[1].
