What is Piranha Plant?
Piranha Plant is an enemy character from Nintendo’s classic ‘Super Mario Brothers’ series, making its debut in the first game released on September 13, 1985, which became a cultural phenomenon.
Characterized by its large sharp teeth, it resides in green pipes and emerges to attack Mario. If Mario stomps on it, he takes damage. It is named Piranha Plant in English.
In the original ‘Super Mario Brothers,’ Piranha Plant was green, but starting from ‘Super Mario Brothers 2,’ a faster red variant was introduced.
In ‘Super Mario Brothers 3,’ an evolved walking Piranha Plant and its derivative, the Hoopster Piranha, appeared. The design of Piranha Plant settled into its current form from ‘Super Mario Brothers 3.’

Let’s get started with the unboxing and assembly review of LEGO® Super Mario’s ‘Piranha Plant 71426’!
Box Contents
Inside are six bags and assembly instructions. Overall, the parts have a green, red, and white color scheme.
Constructing the Piranha Plant’s Pipe
Since the Piranha Plant emerges from a green pipe to attack Mario, we’ll start by assembling that pipe.
Utilize both small and large green curved slopes to recreate the curves of the pipe. Be cautious as the design does not involve attaching parts in the same manner in all four directions, so it’s easy to make mistakes if not paying attention.
土管が完成!土管の先端部分だけなので、どちらかというと緑の植木鉢に見える。
Constructing the Piranha Plant’s Stem and Leaves
Next, we’ll use green parts to build the stem. As Piranha Plant has a large head, the stem is constructed with sturdy blocks.
Insert the completed stem into the pipe. The base of the stem that inserts into the pipe tilts back and forth, so the stem is not fixed with studs but simply inserted into holes.
Since Piranha Plant’s large head is positioned at the front, this design ensures balance, as tilting it slightly backward is necessary.
Attach the leaves to the stem using ball joints. The leaves have hinges in the middle, allowing adjustment to achieve the desired angle for photography.
The strong contrast of the two shades of green creates a cute design that seems to leap straight out of the game screen!
Completion of Piranha Plant
Connect the pink tongue, creepy white lips, sharp teeth, and red head with white polka dots using ball joints.
The familiar Piranha Plant is complete!
As the head is connected to the stem with just one ball joint and is heavy, it tends to hang down to the lowest position. Unfortunately, it cannot be adjusted to face slightly upward.
When it opens its mouth wide, the fear intensifies. You can almost hear its roar!
When placed far away, you can’t help but feel like it’s staring at you. Is it really alive?
Functions of the Piranha Plant’s Pipe
Let’s introduce some of the functions inside the Piranha Plant’s pipe.
Moving the Piranha Plant
Utilizing the tilting of the stem inserted into the pipe, it’s possible to move the Piranha Plant back and forth or left and right for interactive play.
However, since it has poor balance and isn’t meant for interactive play, it’s best to display it tilted backward for decoration.
Coin Bank Functionality
Inside the pipe, there is space where you can insert the included coin parts. It’s also okay to put regular coins in besides the included ones.
Pushing the front of the pipe opens the bottom, allowing coins to come out. Since there is no lock, it might not be suitable for serious saving purposes.
Summary of Impressions
It’s uncannily cute, just like the Piranha Plant in the game!
The Piranha Plant is incredibly lifelike; it feels like it might start talking at any moment.
Whether you’re a fan of Super Mario or not, you’ll want to display this in your room!
