Design of Blacktron
Blacktron sets are instantly recognizable by their distinctive color scheme.
- Main colors: Black and yellow
- Accent colors: Transparent yellow and red
The minifigures wear black jumpsuits reminiscent of modern military pilots, featuring white stripes and black visors. Compared to the retro-looking minifigures in Classic Space, these figures have a sophisticated design.
Features of Blacktron Products
The modular interchangeability is a defining feature of Blacktron sets.
Users could endlessly create new formations by rearranging parts of spaceships, vehicles, and bases. The modular concept is also incorporated in today’s LEGO(R) bricks.
The four main Blacktron sets are as follows:
Renegade (6954)
313 pieces | Released in 1987
“Renegade” means “rebel.” This large spaceship can be split into multiple smaller modules. It is compatible with other modules, such as “Invader” and “Battrax,” allowing for creative combinations.
Invader (6894)
164 pieces | Released in 1987
A medium-sized spaceship that can be divided into three modules: cockpit, cargo, and drive. It features an interface compatible with other Blacktron products.

Battrax (6941)
284 pieces | Released in 1987
A medium-sized space vehicle. It is modular, allowing users to play by combining the rear wing and cockpit as a spaceship.
Message Intercept Base (6987)
569 pieces | Released in 1988
A space base for intercepting communications, comprising a command center and spaceship landing area. This futuristic set includes features like a sliding command center and a roof on the landing area that opens and closes with a turn of the knob.
The Story of Blacktron
When first released, Blacktron was a neutral faction without a clear distinction between good and evil. However, it was defined as a villainous faction in 1989 with the introduction of the rival Space Police.
In LEGO(R) Space from the 1980s to 1990s, three factions—Futuron as civilians, Space Police as heroes, and Blacktron as villains—were introduced, adding depth to the storyline.

Later, the LEGO(R) Group introduced “Blacktron 2” in 1991, which revamped the color scheme to black, white, and neon green, while in 1990 the red-themed “M-Tron” for rescue and firefighting roles expanded the LEGO(R) Space lineup, further broadening the fan base.

Summary of Blacktron Information
With its modular design, futuristic color scheme, and rich storyline, Blacktron became a highly popular series in the LEGO(R) Space lineup.
As mentioned above, Invader was re-released in 2023, and a new reissue is anticipated in January 2025.
Blacktron remains a popular and well-regarded LEGO(R) Space series among fans.
