Donkey Kong has been selected to advance to the review stage of the ‘LEGO Ideas’ project, which turns LEGO fan creations into products.
If it passes the review, it will be released as a new LEGO Ideas set between 2025 and 2026.

The storyline involves Donkey Kong kidnapping the protagonist’s girlfriend and escaping to a construction site, where the player must go to rescue her.
According to Wikipedia, the protagonist of ‘Donkey Kong’ resembled Mario, but was not initially intended to be him. It was in the 1982 release of ‘Donkey Kong Jr.’, where Mario appeared as the villain who imprisoned Donkey Kong, that he was officially named Mario.
The first installment of the Mario series, ‘Mario Bros.’, was released in 1983, before ‘Super Mario Bros.’, making ‘Donkey Kong’ and ‘Donkey Kong Jr.’ earlier releases.
In the 1981 release of ‘Donkey Kong’, Mario had not yet been given a name, but the game is effectively Mario’s first appearance.
In ‘Donkey Kong’, the woman whom Mario sets out to rescue was initially called Lady, but she was later named Pauline.
Donkey Kong attacks Mario by throwing barrels. According to Wikipedia, he was originally kept as a pet by the protagonist, but he kidnapped the protagonist’s girlfriend to tease him and fled to a construction site.
What Are the Chances of It Becoming a Product?
The creator, If You Build It, is advancing to the review stage for the third time.
Since Donkey Kong was a hugely popular game, many people, especially those from the generation who played it, would be thrilled if it were turned into a LEGO product.
However, given the strong partnership between the LEGO Group and Nintendo with products like LEGO Super Mario, LEGO The Legend of Zelda, and LEGO Animal Crossing, and the existing Donkey Kong-themed products in the LEGO Super Mario series, the likelihood of a Nintendo IP being released through LEGO Ideas is extremely low. It might even be excluded from the review.
