Donkey Kong
Some sets from the “Donkey Kong” series, introduced in August 2023 as a sub-theme of LEGO(R) Super Mario, are soon to be discontinued.
While Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo’s most popular characters, and the release of these LEGO(R) brick sets generated buzz, they don’t seem to have become an explosive hit.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” released in April 2023, a few months before the launch of the LEGO(R) brick Donkey Kong series, features Donkey Kong as a main character.
The film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became a blockbuster hit, earning $1.36 billion in box office revenue, making it the third highest-grossing animated film of all time (as of July 2024)[1]. In retrospect, it might have been beneficial for LEGO(R) brick to release the Donkey Kong sets to coincide with the movie’s release.
LEGO(R) Avatar
All products in the LEGO(R) Avatar line, themed after James Cameron’s “Avatar” film series, are soon to be discontinued.
The first wave of LEGO(R) Avatar sets was released in October 2022, slightly ahead of the December 16, 2022 premiere of the second Avatar film, “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

As a side note, before the official LEGO(R) Avatar sets were released, “Avatar” was a popular theme in LEGO(R) Ideas, a platform where user-created designs can become official products. Several Avatar-themed projects made it to the review stage. Currently, “Avatar” is listed as a restricted content for submissions on LEGO(R) Ideas.
The first wave of LEGO(R) Avatar sets was themed after the 2009 movie “Avatar,” but in January 2023, sets based on “Avatar: The Way of Water” were also released. Now, all of these sets have been added to the list of products that will soon be discontinued.
The LEGO(R) Avatar products gained attention for featuring minifigures with longer arms and legs, a design that hadn’t been used in LEGO sets for a long time. If you’re interested, it might be a good idea to purchase them now. However, do note that these minifigures have unique printed designs.

New LEGO(R) Avatar Sets Coming in Late 2025?
The “Avatar” film series is confirmed for five installments, with the third movie already finished filming and scheduled for release on December 19, 2025.
While there were predictions of new LEGO(R) Avatar sets launching around summer 2024, the anticipated product numbers were assigned to LEGO(R) sets for “Minions: The Rise of Gru”. This suggests that the next LEGO(R) Avatar release might not happen until autumn 2025, just before the third movie’s premiere.
The first “Avatar” movie holds the world record for box office earnings at approximately $2.92 billion, while the sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” ranks third with about $2.3 billion. For reference, “Avengers: Endgame” sits in second place with around $2.8 billion. (As of July 2024, according to Wikipedia)
With the third movie almost certain to be another $2 billion+ blockbuster, new LEGO(R) Avatar product releases are virtually guaranteed.
Book Series
The LEGO(R) Disney book series, when first released in 2020, was quite popular, with the Frozen set in particular experiencing shortages. However, recent products in the series have been less popular, likely due to their somewhat higher price points compared to earlier releases.
The set being discontinued this time is The Little Mermaid. This theme is based on the recently released live-action film adaptation.
